 Mavis Bank Medical-Dental Clinic |
| Today we began seeing patients in the Mavis Bank dental clinic. We had two dentists, five fourth-year dental students, and nine second and third-year students. When we got to the clinic, there were more patients waiting than we could have seen all day. We had three real dental chairs and three medical-type tables on which to see patients. | | Only two of the stations had the necessary equipment to do fillings; the other four were used for extractions. We were as busy as we could be until around 2:45, when the power went off. By that time we had seen 31 patients, done 10 fillings, 52 extractions, and 1 cleaning. If the electricity can be restored, then perhaps we can eventually see the patients we had to turn away. |

Dr. Jim Carney spent much of his time trying to keep all the equipment running. He had worked to equip the clinic a few years before, and it was a constant battle to keep the generator, compressor, vacuum pump and other equipment going. |

Every once in a while a dental student would solicit his help with a patient. It was great to have someone with the know-how and peaceful countenance that Jim had.
